St Mary’s Coastal Circuit

St Mary’s Coastal Circuit

Moderate Circular
🤍

Description

Description: A beautiful island coastal loop around St Mary’s, the largest of the Isles of Scilly. This relaxed circuit passes sandy coves, turquoise shallows, and granite headlands with constant sea views. Highlights include Porthcressa Beach, the Garrison walls and viewpoints, Peninnis Head, Old Town Bay, and the peaceful dunes at Porth Hellick. The route is mostly easy with a few gentle climbs around the headlands, and the paths are well-marked. Ideal for a full day of slow-paced exploration, swimming, and photo stops. Spectacular on clear days with views across the archipelago.

Walking Steps:

  1. Start at Hugh Town – Begin near the harbour and follow the coastal path east past Porthcressa Beach.
  2. Climb to the Garrison – Walk the historic Garrison walls for panoramic views over the harbour and islands.
  3. Head south to Peninnis Head – Follow the path along dramatic cliffs with open Atlantic views.
  4. Continue to Old Town Bay – Descend to the sandy bay and stroll through Old Town.
  5. Walk to Porth Hellick – Follow quiet lanes and coastal paths to the sheltered bay and dunes.
  6. Turn north along Bar Point – Follow the shoreline with views to Tresco and Bryher.
  7. Return to Hugh Town – Complete the loop along the north shore back to the harbour.
